I want to be honest about this moment.

The last few weeks in the Community Kitchen have felt heavier than they have in a long time. Between the funding cuts we have received from the State of Missouri and the growing pressure our guests are carrying every day, this season has been hard to hold.

It feels different from the early days of COVID. Then, we were stepping into the unknown, but there was also a real sense of community solidarity. People were asking, “What do you need?” Neighbors, businesses, funders, volunteers, and community partners moved quickly because everyone understood we were facing something together.

This moment is different. The uncertainty is slower and less visible, but it is no less real. It is hard to plan when the targets keep moving. It is hard to prepare our students for economic mobility when the systems around them food access, transportation, health care, housing, and employment feel increasingly fragile. And it is hard to watch our guests carry the consequences of decisions they did not make.

But I also know this: our work has never been about waiting for the conditions to be perfect.

Every day, I see reminders of what still matters. A student learns a new skill. A guest finds a little breathing room. A staff member makes a connection. A partner says yes. A meal becomes a conversation, and a conversation becomes an opening. Those moments may not solve every policy failure, but they create the stability people need to keep moving forward.

That is why The Prospect KC exists. We use food as a catalyst for change because food can open the door to something bigger: training, income, confidence, connection, and possibility. Our job in this season is to keep the door open for our guests, for our students, and for the community that continues to believe everyone deserves a seat at the table.
